Today, during an EPIC launch I’ve been a partner for, both Instagram and Facebook went down. Yikes!
Not perfect timing BUT one thing is for sure….it had ZERO impact on my business because I don’t fully rely on social media to market my business.
Here’s why…
When you post on Instagram, the average lifespan of a post is around 48 hours, with engagement dropping significantly after that period. So unless you get a viral reel (which, let’s face it, even that’s no biggie since you could get thousands of non ideal clients engaging in your post because of a ‘trending audio’ which can do more harm than good when you’re marketing your business!)
Facebook post visibility varies, but on average, posts have a lifespan of about 5 hours before being buried under new content in users’ feeds.
Just like today – these platforms can go down and when they do, if you don’t have a back up this can have a huge impact on the success of your business. Especially if you’re mid launch!
Let me ask you something…
If Instagram was to get taken down for good tomorrow, do you have anything else in place with an audience ready to nurture and sell to? Or have you put all your eggs in Instagrams basket? (something to think about!)
Now, let’s just talk about the areas you SHOULD be focusing on, in addition to social media…
PINTEREST! PINTEREST PINTEREST!
OK, I know you’re busy, I know you don’t have time for another social media platform to manage but just hold the phone for a minute…
Pinterest IS NOT a social media platform. With over 400 million active users, it’s a powerful search engine and if you’re not using it you are missing out BIG TIME!
Pins have a much longer lifespan compared to social media posts, providing continuous exposure. A single pin can work for your business for months or even years! In fact some of my best performing pins that still continue to drive traffic to my website and get clients booked into my offers are YEARS old!
By leveraging Pinterest’s visual nature, you can showcase your products/services/expertise to a broader audience.
Next up, it’s your own website.
Now you don’t NEED a website to convert clients. You can have a landing page with another platform or even direct clients to buy from you directly through payment links.
BUT a search engine optimised (SEO) website ranks higher in search engine results which will drive more organic traffic to your business.
Having a professionally designed website also builds trust and credibility with your audience, which is essential for converting visitors into customers and building recognition of your online brand.
Lastly there’s email marketing. If you don’t currently have a mailing list for your business – this should be a priority because it’s the number one way to convert clients in your business.
Email marketing consistently delivers one of the highest returns on investment (ROI) compared to other marketing channels. This is because your audience has actually opted in/signed up to join your mailing list meaning they’re already a warm audience to sell to.
Emailing your list at least twice per week helps with building and nurturing relationships with those warm leads and increases brand awareness, leading to increased trust and loyalty. You can even segment your email list based on demographics, behaviour, or interests, making it easy for you to target the right people into the relevant offers/content you share with them.
So, while social media is still a valuable component of any online marketing strategy, it shouldn’t be the only focus for growing your online visibility.
Diversifying across multiple channels, including email marketing, search engine optimisation, and other platforms like Pinterest or your own website, provides a more stable and sustainable approach to online visibility and business growth.
